The Housing Choice Voucher Program is the federal government's major program for assisting very low-income persons to afford a decent place to live in the private market.

A family that is issued a housing voucher is responsible for finding a suitable housing unit in the city limits of Fort Dodge where the owner agrees to rent under the program. The Housing Agency will inspect the unit to ensure the unit meets Housing Quality Standards.

Housing subsidy is paid to the landlord directly by the Housing Agency on behalf of the participating family. The family then pays the difference between the amount charged by the landlord and the amount subsidized by the program. The voucher family must pay 30% of its monthly-adjusted gross income toward rent and utilities. The family may not pay more than 40% of its monthly-adjusted gross income toward rent and utilities.

The Federal Government has set "Payment Standards" as the maximum amounts of rental assistance. These figures include utilities. The Payment Standards in effect are as follows:

 If the family wishes to remain in their present housing at the time they are accepted for the program, their unit must be approved by the Housing agency according to the above guidelines. The owner must be willing to participate in the Section 8 Program.

The Fort Dodge Housing Agency maintains a listing of units available for rent in the City of Fort Dodge.  Landlords may call in when they have a unit available and it is added to the list.  Updates to this list can occur several times daily.  If you wish to receive a copy of the most current listing either stop in the office and pick up the list or email us at:  info@fd-housing.org
